Restoran Gulai 7 Kawah - Alor Setar, Kedah

This restaurant got its name by unique dishes cook in seven kawah (crater), the Seven Craters Gravy restaurant. I was really impressed with the dishes in the trays and kawah, could not decide what I would eat. There were wide spread of Malay dishes and gravies. It served Malay mix rice dishes besides seven types of gulai kawah as their specialities. So what you can imagine of the seven gravies are?

There are turkey, ayam kampung porcupine, daging batang pisang (beef cook with banana stem), mutton, and duck, all of them in separate kawah! You can also get grilled fishes, keli (cat fish), stingray and etc., all of them marinated with special spices and slowly grilled on top of traditional big crock.

For those who does not want to eat rice, have an option to eat pulut kukus mangga (steam glutinous rice with sliced manggo) or with the dishes or gravies as a side. They put complimentary betel (sirih pinang) on the table for diner who want to try it out as alternate to cigarette.

There are wide dining tables under the shade of daun nipah (palm leaves) roof. You can see few hang bunting or banners with Kedah accent wordings with the Bahasa Melayu translation, enjoy dining while reading those quite funny wordings. According to Puan Anisah Yacob, the owner of Restoran Gulai 7 Kawah, it has been operating more than 10 years, in front of Seri Gunong Primary School, main road to the the Gunong Keriang, Alor Setar.
